This study is intended to accomplish that purpose."// - /Walter Wink, Professor of Biblical Interpretation at Auburn Theological Seminary
Is it possible to live faithfully in a violent world? Can we create a culture of peace and nonviolence - nationally and internationally - to replace a culture of violence in the world? This 7-week Adult Forum series will be a "dialogue of discovery" to find out what Jesus did to break the cycle of violence and what we can do to be living prayers of peace. In addition to our study process we will host guest speakers who are engaged in various ways in the work of peacemaking. The series begins on September 20.

- *Adult Bible Study: **/"First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom"/* featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg
Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there?
Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus -- Divine, Son of God, God from God, Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World -- taken from a Roman emperor on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain? Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing.
What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom? How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today?
First Light is a 12-session DVD study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God with two of the world's leading Jesus scholars on location throughout the Galilee and Jerusalem.
Participant Reader written by John Dominic Crossan: “It is all I have to say about Jesus after half a century of study--in succinct summary.”
Sessions will run at Bethel, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays from September 22 to December 1. A fee of $10.00 will cover the costs of the Participant Reader. Please register by emailing or calling the church office by September 10th so we know how many readers to run off.
